This is a print of a hand-tinted fashion plate that appeared at the beginning of Godey's Magazine and Lady's Book (Godey's was an American women's magazine published from 1830-1878 and was the most widely circulated magazine before the civil war). The fashion plates were to provide a record of the progression of women's dress. In this case, what the trends were in December 1870!
